Cupra refused to release sports carsDecember 12, 2019
Cupra’s CEO eliminates sports cars for financial reasons, at least in the short term.
In the near future, Cupra is unlikely to build a custom-made sports car, as CEO Luca de Meo said the brand will be focused on SUVs, since the argument for developing a sports car in the current period is emotional rather than rational. Roadsters, 2-seater cars and convertibles are a prospect, and they, unlike SUVs, although fast and manageable, but very uncomfortable.
“I can’t afford to spend several hundred million on something where I sell 15 thousand cars at a loss just for the sake of a sports car. When I have the resources, I can say that we have a lot of creativity, but at the moment this is not a priority. Seat sells 500 thousand cars a year. I can’t afford such a luxury, although I like it, ”said de Meo.
According to him, the original idea for the Cupra was much less ambitious, but since that time the brand stood out from Seat, three new Cupra models came out, and all of them are SUVs: Cupra Ateca, Formentor and Tavascan, the prototype of the electric SUV, the production of which is most likely will start very soon.
