Cross-version of the convertible FIAT 500X will appear in 2021January 14, 2021
With the new 500X named one of the great new products of 2021, FIAT will join a very specific market niche for convertible crossovers. The brand has confirmed that they will launch a new variant of the FIAT 500X Cabrio next year, which will enhance the appeal of the Italian model.
The revolution that is now taking place in FIAT under the auspices of STELLANTIS and the leadership of the French auto giant is already giving rise to one of the first new products. FIAT 500X Cabrio is a combination unexpected from the Italian brand, which will become reality in the nearest future. Its appearance has been confirmed by Pietro Gorlier himself, FCA Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa.
However, the Italians’ new project is the trigger they need in an increasingly competitive segment and with an almost identical offer. The new FIAT 500X Cabrio will be a slightly quirky but more practical alternative to the Volkswagen T-Roc.
To stand out from the competition, the FIAT 500X Cabrio will follow almost the same concept as the 500C: it is a perfectly stretched “canvas” covering a roof that retracts automatically, albeit with an important nuance compared to a convertible. It is reported that the roof will fold at the rear, one layer on top of another, without leaning on the tailgate.
This is a relatively inexpensive solution, since it retains all the struts, including the center ones, and therefore does not require additional reinforcement costs, as in the Volkswagen model. In this case, the rear door will be functional and will be able to fully open. From an aesthetic point of view, no major changes are expected, so the image of the original model, which was updated in 2019, will remain.
The 500X convertible, which has reportedly already been unveiled at a private event with a new three-cylinder 1.0-liter FireFly and a mild-hybrid setup with a maximum output of 120 hp, will debut this spring and will reach dealerships by next summer, though FIAT has not officially confirmed the timing. Its final commercial name is also unknown: “500X Cabrio” and “500X Open Air” are under consideration.
