The American C8-generation Chevy Corvette Stingray sports coupe will be the official Indianapolis 500-mile (Indy 500) race car this year. The start of the races is scheduled for August 23

The C8 Chevy Corvette featured in this article is Torch Red and has the Z51 performance package. It has a tall rear wing, aggressive aerodynamic body kit with carbon fiber trim, GT2 bucket seats and Indy 500 racing livery. GM President Mark Reuss will be at the wheel.

“I am truly honored to have the opportunity to be behind the wheel of a Corvette Pace Car in a historic race like the Indy 500,” Reuss said in a statement. “The 2020 Corvette Stingray is the result of a close collaboration between the Corvette Racing team and our engineers, setting a new standard for supercars around the world.”

For reference, a pace car is a vehicle that has a special role to play in racing. During the so-called warm-up laps, a pace car leads the column of racing cars, it sets the pace for the rest of the race. Then, he leaves the track, and the column, having completed another lap in a quiet mode, begins the race.

This will be the 17th time the Corvette will be the official pace car of the Indy 500.

“This is a continuation of our outstanding partnership with Chevrolet,” added J. Douglas Bowles, President of the race organizer, Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “We are very grateful to Chevrolet for everything that has contributed to the success of our events. The 2020 Corvette Stingray Torch Red is a world-class car that combines speed, performance and excitement, ideal for full participation in our races. “

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Indy 500 was slated to gain 50% viewers this month, but earlier this month it was confirmed that fans would not be attending the event at all. The race will air on NBC in the United States and will begin at 2:30 pm ET on Sunday, August 23rd.
