Continental invented ContiFlexStud rubber spikesOctober 25, 2018
The new technology has a number of features that make tires quieter while driving, and also eliminate the loss of spikes.
Thanks to a new development, Continental has increased the level of active safety and comfort of studded winter tires. In addition, rubberized spikes cause much less damage to the road surface, which in winter is not always covered with ice and snow. According to research – by 20%.
“Ordinary spikes are not able to completely penetrate the ice on the road, because they are hampered by a rigid aluminum body. Our rubber-studded ContiFlexStuds allow carbide tips to go deeper into the ice. As a result, each of these new studs provides approximately 7% more grip on the ice, which means a major breakthrough in the field of active safety, ”says Marco Jellings, head of the winter tire development department at Continental.
To avoid the loss of spikes, from which no tire was previously insured, allows that they vulcanize into a tire at the production stage. This feature not only keeps grip properties at the proper level. This saves the owner from the need for additional wheel balancing in the middle of the season.
Another important feature of the technology was the reduced noise level that spikes produce during rolling on bare asphalt. They do not come in contact with the road surface and do not click.
You can get Continental tires with the new ContiFlexStud technology today, but, unfortunately, it is used only on one size type of the IceContact 2 – 235/45 R18. Moreover, the series is limited and the stocks of these tires are limited.
