ConnectedDrive became one of the “chips” of the BMW 8-SeriesJune 17, 2018
The long-awaited BMW 8-Series Coupe is officially unveiled. Much has been said about all the features of the Bavarian novelty. Are you sure that you know about all of its “chips”? Have you heard anything about ConnectedDrive?
Thanks to the incredible appearance of the BMW 8-Series Coupe, as well as the two impressive power units that it will be equipped with, the Bavarian novelty certainly makes the main competitors of the Bavarian brand nervous – it’s about Mercedes-Benz and Audi. One of the most interesting innovations of the new flagship family 8-Series is its new software ConnectedDrive.
If the lucky owners of the 8-Series have a smartphone with an NFC chip, they can simply place their phone next to the door handle to gain access to the car. Once their phone is installed on the wireless charging platform, the car can be launched. However, this is not the most important aspect of ConnectedDrive.
In their new family, BMW engineers implemented a system for automatically updating the infotainment system via air. When new software is released by the manufacturer, car owners can use the wireless WiFi network to download it to their phone. Then the car will connect to the smartphone the next time it is turned on and install new software. According to the representatives of the Bavarian automaker, this process will take about 20 minutes.
Last month, the head of BMW Group’s digital services department, Dieter May, said that the brand’s engineers are currently completing all the work on new features. “We are still working on ConnectedDrive. We decide which parts of the car’s software can be updated by air, what if you use a SIM card that’s built into the car, ” – he said in a recent interview with an edition of Automotive News Europe.
The BMW 8-Series 2019 model year is a revived coupe, which was presented on Friday, as part of the start of the Le Mans 24-hour endurance competition. However, even now, the designers have introduced the 8-Series Shooting Brake.
