Competitor Nissan X-Trail from Seat: the name and the first imageFebruary 20, 2018
In 2017, Seat held a competition for the new seven-seat SUV, the third model of the SUV segment in the brand line. The name was chosen by popular vote – through social networks and on a special website. The main criterion – the name needed to borrow from Spanish geography. The finalists were announced in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show: Alboran, Aranda, Avila and Tarraco. The results of the contest were to be summed up in October, but the political crisis in Catalonia prevented this. And finally, the name of the new flagship crossover Seat was officially announced – Tarraco.
According to the company, over 146 000 people from 134 countries took part in the competition. The name Tarraco received 35.5% of the vote (51,903 participants), 28.7% of the participants (41,993 people) voted for Avila, the name Aranda gained 26.9% of the vote (39,321 people), Alboran – 8.8% (12 907 people).
Tarraco – the former name of the Spanish city, located on the Mediterranean coast. As noted in Seat, this is the oldest settlement of the Roman Empire. Now the city is called Tarragona. By the way, the tradition to use names from local geography from Seat was born back in 1982 with the release of the model Ronda (a town in Andalusia). Since then, all the brand cars carry Spanish names.
Seat also published an official image of the new SUV. Judging by the picture, the flagship crossover is noticeably different from other Seat SUVs – Ateca and Arona. In particular, Tarraco has a radiator grille of a different shape, other headlights. The characteristics of the novelty have not yet been revealed.
According to preliminary data, the new SUV of the Spanish brand will technically be a copy of the Skoda Kodiaq, based on the Volkswagen platform MQB. Probably, new Seat Tarraco will get the engines from Skoda. It’s about gasoline turbo engines 1.4 TSI (150 hp) and 2.0 TSI (180 or 190 hp) and turbodiesel 2.0 TDI (150 or 190 hp). It is not excluded that in the engine range of the crossover Seat will enter and a new turbo engine 1.5 TSI with a return of 150 hp, just debuted on Kodiaq.
In Europe, sales of Seat Tarraco start at the end of this year, the model will be offered in the five- and seven-seater versions. The main competitors of SUV will be, in fact, Skoda Kodiaq and Nissan X-Trail. The date and place of the premiere of Tarraco are not disclosed. Perhaps, the SUV will be brought to the Geneva Motor Show, which will open its doors in March.
