Chinese Grand Prix: Free arrivals on SaturdayApril 13, 2019
Contrary to the forecast, which promised cooler weather on Saturday, in the morning in Shanghai it was warm and sunny – the air warmed up to 19 degrees, and the route to 39 degrees. This created quite comfortable and relevant conditions for subsequent sessions, and the pilots began work on the track relatively early. The first, as usual, Williams pilots left, but soon the others pulled after them.
The pilots again worked with different compositions, and the best time was set by Sebastian Vettel on Soft, well ahead of his partner on the same rubber. Mercedes preferred Medium and were noticeably slower than Sebastian. When less than 15 minutes remained before the end of the session, the Ferrari and Mercedes drivers returned to the track on Soft tires, and the struggle for the best time between them began. However, Vettel was wrong in the last turn, Hamilton – in the sixth, and the best time in the end went to Bottas.
It could still have changed, but six minutes before the end of the session, red flags appeared — Alexander Elbon seriously smashed the car. The pilot of the Toro Rosso too far out of the last turn, was on artificial grass, but tried to continue to attack, which led to loss of control over the machine and the strongest impact on the barrier. The driver was not injured, although he was sent to a medical center, but the car was almost completely destroyed. It was decided not to renew the session.
