The design of the mid-sized crossover of the Chinese brand Hongqi – the third SUV in the company’s lineup is revealed. Also became known basic characteristics of the model
The premium brand Hongqi belongs to the Chinese concern FAW, and under it, since 1958, they have produced limousines for the local party elite. Since the 90s, they began to produce cars for middle managers, in 2013 the first market model appeared in the brand range – the H7 sedan, created on the rear-wheel drive platform of the old Toyota Crown. Not so long ago, the L5 limousine and the H4, built on the basis of the current Mazda6, were also launched for free sale. And this year, Hongqi will finally bring crossovers to the home market.
The first-born in the premium brand SUV-line will be the E-HS3 electric SUV, its production has already started. The mid-size HS5 and the flagship coupe HS7 will follow. The latter was lit up in 2018 at the Guangzhou Auto Show, now the HS5 commodity is also revealed – photos of this model are included in the database of the Ministry of Industry of China. Traditionally, along with the pictures appeared and the main characteristics. By the way, the certification authority has data and photos of the senior HS7 – last year Hongqi only showed the car, the brand did not provide information about it then. However, first things first.
So, the appearance of the five-seater crossover HS5 was made based on the show car U-Concept, which debuted in 2017. Serial SUV received LED optics and the family grille with vertical wedges. There are no details about the platform on which the HS5 is built, but its dimensions are known: the length is 4760 mm, the distance between the axes is 2870 mm. Note, competitors to the flagship HS7 local media recorded a BMW X5 crossover. And one of the main rivals of the HS5, in this case, can be considered the BMW X3, besides, the German car is very close in its dimensions: length – 4708 mm, wheelbase – 2864 mm.
The engine for Hongqi HS5 has so far been announced only one – this is the gasoline turbo four 2.0 of the FAW concern’s own design (factory index CA4GC20TD-32). Motor power – 224 hp The Ministry of Industry does not indicate the boxes, there is no information in the documents about the drive either. However, Chinese media profile reports that the engine is combined with the automatic ytansmission, and that the cross has a version of 4WD.
Now, as for the older SUV Hongqi HS7. According to preliminary information, this SUV is built on the same platform as the already mentioned H7 sedan, that is, on the platform of the former Toyota Crown (FAW has a joint venture with Toyota). The length of the flagship crossover – 5035 mm, wheelbase – 3008 mm (for BMW X5 – 4922 and 2975 mm, respectively). So far, only the five-seat version is certified, but according to rumors, the model will still have a three-row version. Under the hood, there is a gasoline turbo engine V6 3.0 (also developed by FAW, index CA6GV30TD) with a return of 337 hp, which is combined with the eight-speed Aisin automatic gearbox. It is assumed that, for the HS7 also provides four-wheel drive.
Later, both the HS5 and HS7 should have either hybrid or all-electric versions, but there are no details about their settings yet.
Prices for new crossovers have not yet been announced, but they will definitely be lower than the BMW X3 and BMW X5. X3 in China today costs from 399,800 yuan, and X5 there will cost at least 779,900 yuan.
Outside of the China, Hongqi cars do not sell. However, earlier the FAW concern opened its own design center in Germany and lured the chief designer of Rolls-Royce – it is possible that the Chinese are preparing to enter the European market.
