Chief designer Hyundai has promised to stop making boring carsApril 13, 2018
Chief designer Hyundai Luke Donkervolke called the current approach of the Korean manufacturer on the use of a single stylistics for the entire model line “boring”. In an interview with Motoring, the top manager said that today’s cars lack individuality and he is ready to fix it.
In the future, according to Donkervolke, his team will create cars, the design of which will take into account the specificity of the segment. The first models Hyundai, showing a completely different approach to stylistics, will be presented at the end of this year or early next year.
As for Genesis brand belonging to Hyundai, the “design language” of the brand will evolve more consistently and with restraint. It is based on ideas laid down by the conceptual electric coupe Essentia. “Genesis should not be vulgar, excessive and” loud, “says Donkervolke, blaming the competition for this: Lexus and Infiniti.
The design concept of future models of the premium brand Donkervolke describes as “the beauty of emptiness” or the beauty of white space. This approach should be associated with tranquility and serenity. In addition, the traditional attributes of Korean design will become a mandatory attribute of Genesis cars. However, it does not specify which ones.
According to Donkervolke, work is already underway to expand the Genesis product line. In the line of the brand should appear three sedans, two crossover, coupe and an electric car.
Luc Doneckervolke became chief designer of Hyundai in 2016. Before that he worked in Bentley, Audi, Seat and Lamborghini. Among his works is the development of the appearance of Lamborghini Murcielago and Gallardo.
