Chevrolet Sonic sedan and hatchback discontinuedJuly 9, 2020
A contender was immediately found on the vacant spot at the brand. The fate of the model to the American television channel CNBC was told by spokesman for General Motors Megan Soul.
According to her, already in October, the Chevrolet Sonic family will leave the conveyor of the brand’s Michigan plant. At the same time, the place of the departed Sonic in the 2021st will be taken by the Chevrolet Bolt EUV electric car.
The reason why the brand refused to produce Chevrolet Sonic sedans and hatchbacks, as Megan Soul noted in an interview with reporters, was low sales. This model for the last time showed good momentum back in 2014. After that, sales of the Chevrolet Sonic declined.
For comparison, if in 2014 the brand sold 93,518 of these cars, then last year the sales volume of the model reached 13,971 units. In the six months of 2020, only 6,452 American motorists chose the Chevrolet Sonic.
Currently, for the most affordable hatchback, Sonic is asking for $ 20,295. The base sedan is cheaper – $ 17,595.
In general, the departure of the Chevrolet Sonic hatchback is quite logical: the brand has long announced a new development strategy tied around electric vehicles and SUV segment cars. Recall, the manufacturer has already managed to dismiss the once popular sedans Impala and Cruze. Malibu and Spark are waiting in line.
