Chevrolet may abandon the Malibu sedan after 2023June 9, 2020
Chevrolet has already discontinued production of a number of sedans in North America, including Cruze, Volt and Impala. Now there is a chance of abandoning the Malibu model.
Although it was previously noted that the Malibu sedan can get a facelift in 2022, today, June 9, the GM Authority portal said that the American company will abandon this car after 2023.
The reason for the possible departure of Malibu is called the crisis caused by the coronavirus and low sales. According to the agency, before the pandemic, the completion of the life cycle of the model was planned for 2025.
Malibu’s sales volume has actually only declined over the past few years. In 2016, Chevrolet sold 227,881 units. models in the USA, in 2017 – 185 857 units, and in 2018 – 144 542 units. In turn, last year sales fell to 131,917 units.
Watching this situation, Chevrolet released a hybrid version of Malibu. At the same time, apparently, this will not help the model stay in the brand line for a longer time.
At the same time, it is possible that Malibu will be replaced with a new electric car. This is hinted at by the road map of electric cars released by GM in February this year, which indicates a car in a sedan.
It should be emphasized that after the abandonment of Malibu in the model range Chevrolet in the United States will remain the only Sonic sedan.
In addition, earlier it became known that Chevrolet is going to release more than 20,000 Corvette. Production of the 2021 model should begin on November 2 of this year.
