Charged Kia Ceed GT: the engine from the predecessor and the new transmissionSeptember 13, 2018
The Korean brand introduced a sports version of the new generation charged hatch Kia Ceed GT. A full-fledged competitor of the Hyundai i30 N-related model Kia will not.
Externally from the standard “five-door” new Kia Ceed GT differs bumpers, radiator grille, overlays on the thresholds, as well as two branch pipes of the exhaust system. The sports hatch “stands” on 18-inch wheels, the ground clearance of the model is reduced from 140 to 135 mm, so the center of gravity is lower. In the cabin Kia Ceed GT – seats with increased lateral support, a truncated steering wheel and a red stitch.
The engine “charged” hatch got from the predecessor – gasoline turbo engine 1.6 T-GDI power of 204 hp. (265 Nm). Most likely, from a more powerful engine in Kia refused to avoid cannibalism with akin Hyundai i30 (2.0 T-GDI, 250 or 275 hp, the torque in both cases – 353 Nm). But the buyers of the new Ceed GT will be available two boxes – a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic transmission with two clutches and paddle lobes (7DCT, own development). Recall, the previous cee’d GT was offered only with 6-speed manual transmission. In the two-pedal version of the new hatch, the two driving modes are Normal or Sport. Dynamic characteristics of the model are not yet revealed, the previous cee’d GT first 100 km/h dial in 7.6 seconds.
Running tests and adjustments to the new “five-door” was conducted by a team led by Albert Birman, who previously worked in the BMW M, and now is responsible for the sports models in Hyundai-Kia. The Ceed GT has stiffer springs, which has improved handling and reduced rolls. Stabilizers of lateral stability, on the contrary, became softer: this should ensure better preservation of tires’ contact with asphalt from the inside of the turn.
The hatch has an imitation of the thrust vector control, using in the turns the standard brakes to redistribute the torque between the driving wheels. The stabilization system is retuned – it is now loyal to slides. In addition, the new Ceed GT has increased the size of the brakes: the front discs are 32 mm larger in diameter (320 mm) and 3 mm thicker (28 mm) than other versions of Ceed. Also, the hatch got a more sharp steering gear: from the stop to the stop the steering wheel makes 2.44 turns, which is 17% less than the previous generation model.
Public display of the “charged” hatchback Kia will be held in October at the Paris Motor Show. In the same place, the company will introduce another member of the new generation Ceed family – a station wagon with a lowered roof, ProCeed, which replaced the three-door pro_cee’d. The “shed” will also have a “hot” version of the GT. The new Kia Ceed GT and ProCeed will reach European dealers in the first quarter of next year.
By the way, today Kia presented one more model ProCeed of a new generation.
