Carlos Sainz: Of course, I’m annoyedApril 1, 2019
For McLaren, the race in Bahrain is mixed. Debutant team Lando Norris earned his first points, while Carlos Sainz was forced to go the distance.
Lando Norris (6th): “I am happy to earn my first points and am very happy for our entire team, which worked nicely in the offseason. At the time of the start, I managed to get off well, but almost immediately there was a slight slip. In the first turn I was blocked, I found myself on the outside of the track, got hit by another car and was forced to drive on a gravel strip, losing on this position.
However, further my pace was quite good, I quickly caught up with a group of riders ahead. In this group, everyone used DRS, and it was very difficult to attack, but as soon as someone lagged behind, I quickly overtook it. On the last leg of the race was quite difficult, but I still managed to finish ahead of Kimi Raikkonen. Sixth place is an excellent result! ”
Carlos Sainz (descent): “I am very upset by the way the race has developed. I was a great start, in the first laps I won a lot of positions and held on to the top five riders. Then I tried to go through the outer radius of the car Red Bull Racing, but got hit. In the collision, I got more, I pierced the wheel, and later, for some other reason, I left the race. Of course, I am annoyed: we claimed a large number of points, but everything ended differently.
If we talk about positive moments, the car was going great today, Lando earned a lot of points for the team, my congratulations! I will try to achieve a good result in China. ”
Gilles de Ferrand, sports director: “On the one hand, we are very pleased with the result, but on the other, we are wondering how much better things could have been. It’s a shame for Carlos: he was very fast at the beginning of the race, but the clash deprived him of the chances for a successful performance. At the same time, Lando incredibly spectacular spent this Grand Prix: having lost positions in the first circles, he managed to break into sixth place, demonstrating all his dedication, perseverance, excellent speed and ability to perfectly monitor the condition of the tires.
Today it was very difficult to choose the best plan for the race. On the behavior of the tires and the conditions on the track, and an incredibly tight struggle in the peloton, but the team managed due to the chosen strategy and impeccable pit stops to earn first points this season. We leave Bahrain with a sense of satisfaction, but at the same time remain focused, as there is still a lot of work ahead. ”
