Car interior recognized as the dirtiest place on EarthJanuary 28, 2019
The fate of car sharing and car rental is at stake! It turned out that, for example, the steering wheel of the car is 4 times dirtier than the toilet.
The car’s interior should be cleaned as often as possible: a small space is polluted very quickly, and many pathogenic bacteria accumulate on the surface of the skin.
This confirms not one, but several studies at once. For example, the site CarRentals, dedicated to car rental, conducted a survey among 1000 motorists and found out that on average, drivers clean the interior only once a year, and 32% of respondents – and even less. The same conclusions were reached in the car rental service Expedia Group. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the car’s interior is one of the dirtiest places on Earth, even dirtier than the toilet seat. For example, the steering wheel is dirtier than four times the toilet. This is very unpleasant, given that we touch most often in the car exactly the steering wheel.
During the study, scientists of the National Center for Biotechnology Information measured the average number of bacteria or colony forming units (CFU) per square centimeter of different surfaces of the vehicle interior. It was found that the steering wheels have a CFU index of 629. For comparison, the mobile phone screen has a CFU index of 100, and the common elevator buttons have 313 CFU. As for the cleanliness of public toilet bowls, their average index is 172 CFU.
The most common types of bacteria in a car are staphylococcus, including Staphylococcus aureus. All of them – the cause of many diseases, such as food poisoning, skin infections and so on. Another common type of bacteria in car interiors is propionic acid bacteria, which cause inflammation and infection. These are the two most common types of bacteria. All in all, an average auto lives about 700 different strains of bacteria.
The worst thing that we used to eat inside our cars. Now, after reading this information, this bad habit should be thrown.
