Bugatti will use the W16 engine during the 2020sJanuary 28, 2020
According to the official representatives of the French brand, the most powerful W16 engine will continue to be used in Bugatti models for this decade. There is simply no decent replacement for the W16 at the moment.
The most powerful Bugatti W16 engine is equipped with the world’s most expensive Bugatti La Voiture Noire, as well as the fastest production model ever made – the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+. Similar monstrous motors began to be used by the automaker around the end of the 1990s, when the brand became owned by the German Volkswagen Group. First came the concept of the EB 118 with a 6.3-liter W18, and then the EB 218, shown a year later.
After some time, Bugatti decided to use only the 8.0-liter W16 engine.
It was equipped with the Veyron model, introduced in 2000. The same engine, with only some modifications, is used today in the Bugatti Chiron hypercar, where it produces 1577 horsepower.
A couple of hours ago it became known that the W16 engine would not retire in the near future. Despite stricter emission standards, the head of Bugatti said in an interview that the motor will continue to exist in the brand’s models until the end of this decade. Stefan Winkelmann called the 8.0-liter unit a true work of art.
Mr. Winkelmann further said that the management of the German Volkswagen Group, which includes Bugatti, “knows the true price of the W16 engine.” He meant that these guys are fully aware of how valuable the 8.0-liter engine is, and therefore are not going to abandon it.
