Hennessey does not believe in the claimed power of the Chiron Longtail hypercar

John Hennessey, founder of the American company Hennessey, was skeptical of official information about the “almost serial” hypercar Chiron, which broke the speed record on September 2. Then the French manufacturer announced that the output of the 8.0-liter W16 was increased to 1,600 horsepower, but, according to Hennessy, the motor power is approaching 2,000.

In an interview with TopGear, John Hennessey paid tribute to the Bugatti engineers and admired the tire company Michelin, which was able to create tires that can withstand speeds of almost 500 kilometers per hour.

At the same time, the Hennessey boss reacted with disbelief to the official Bugatti report, which said that the record was “close to serial hypercar”, and the improvements were reduced to 100 horsepower, an increase in wheelbase, lowering the suspension and improving aerodynamics. According to Hennessy’s calculations, in order to exceed the maximum speed of the Chiron Sport, the claimed modernization of the serial hypercar is not enough and the power of the record prototype approaches 2000 “horses”.

Hennessey is one of three automakers that tried to break the speed record for production cars. To reach speeds of more than 480 kilometers per hour, the Hennessey Venom F5 was planned, equipped with a twin-turbo V8 with a volume of 7.4 liters and a capacity of 1,600 horsepower. According to the initial characteristics, the American hypercar is 450 kg lighter than the Bugatti and has a drag coefficient of 0.33 – 0.05 better than the “regular” Chiron.

Hennessy was surprised that the Bugatti was limited to one race under the control of TÜV – the German Technical Supervision Association and did not become nominated for a Guinness World Record. To record in the Book of Records, the French manufacturer would have to travel in two directions and, according to representatives of Bugatti, the Volkswagen Era-Lessin high-speed oval scheme does not allow arrivals in the opposite direction.

Hennessey expects to complete the construction of the “record” Venom F5 hypercar by the end of the year, so in the near future the Americans will attempt to beat the achievement of Bugatti.
