In the 1950s, a car worked in a taxi
In the next episode of the Inside BMW Group Classic series, employees of the German classic car division showed the BMW 501 sedan of the 1950s, which traveled more than a million kilometers. The previous owner transferred the car to the BMW Classic collection, and after 40 years it was completely restored.
The 501 sedan was BMW’s first post-war development and the first car to be assembled at a factory in Bavaria. For the round shape, he and the 502nd who followed him received the nickname “Baroque angel”. The car from the BMW Classic collection was launched in 1955 and is equipped with a V-shaped “eight”. He worked for 15 years in a taxi fleet in Munich, and with a mileage of more than one million kilometers was returned to the company. They say that for this the owner received the new BMW 1500.
Production of the 501s with the V8 lasted from 1954 to 1962. During this time, 5914 units were produced. All sedans were equipped with a 2.6-liter engine with 96 horsepower and a four-speed manual gearbox.
In the 1950s and 1960s, the 501s often entered the police service, where they were used to patrol suburban roads and highways.
