BMW Launches Inline-Six Powerful Eco-Friendly DieselMay 27, 2020
Updates planned for this summer include the installation of soft hybrid technology on the 51 model.
With the release of the updated 5- and 6-Series along with the X2 xDrive25 PHEV and Mini Countryman, it’s safe to say that BMW has a productive week. There is more news from Bavaria, as BMW’s biggest novelty is the launch of a new in-line six-cylinder 3.0-liter diesel engine with an additional 21 horsepower compared to the old version for a total power of 286 hp.
Torque also increased, increasing by 30 Newton meters to 650 Nm, available from 1,500 rpm. The engine is also cleaner than its predecessor, thanks to the use of a soft 48-volt hybrid system, which will be available this summer in 51 models throughout the range. The diesel engine takes advantage of BMW’s latest developments in turbocharging and direct injection common rail, providing extra power while reducing emissions.
The engine will be available in the 7-Series (730d) both as standard and with long wheelbase versions with rear or all-wheel drive, as well as in X3, X4, X5 and X6 SUVs with the xDrive30d badge. In the case of sedans, a more powerful in-line diesel engine reduced the acceleration speed to 100 km / h by 0.2 seconds to 5.9 seconds in the base RWD model and to 5.6 seconds on the equivalent version with xDrive.
BMW also installs a new engine with higher technical specifications in the 740d xDrive, 740Ld xDrive, X3 M40d, X4 M40d and X7 xDrive40d, where it develops 340 hp and 700 Nm. In the standard 740d xDrive with wheelbase, sprint time is reduced by 0.2 seconds to 5.0 seconds.
The 2-Series Gran Coupe receives an entry-level diesel in the front-wheel drive version of the 218d – a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 150 hp. and 350 Nm speeds from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.6 seconds when using a 6-speed manual gearbox or one tenth of a second faster with Steptronic. The 2-Series Gran Coupe is also featured in the 220d xDrive with a 190hp engine. and 400 Nm, which is aimed exclusively at both axles through the aforementioned Steptronic. Such hardware provides sprint achievement in 7.3 seconds.
Other important summer changes are the BMW 7 operating system, which is installed as standard for the 3-Series sedan and station wagon with Android Auto support, as well as updated safety and driver assistance systems. The 7- and 8-Series received a revised rear-wheel steering system and a new range of body shades. The BMW 7 Series gets some changes inside, in the form of a new steering wheel in Individual leather upholstery and an updated specification for full Merino leather in Smoke White / Night Blue / Black.
The complex of changes is completed by the expanded business package for the 2 Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer minivans, as well as new paint options for i3 and other models.
