Apple has hired Ulrich Kranz, a former BMW executive who built electric vehicles at the German company.
This is further confirmation that Apple is building electric vehicles and intends to compete with Tesla and other automakers. Hyundai said earlier this year that it was in talks with Apple to build the car, but the company then added that negotiations had ended.
Apple has never officially confirmed that it is developing the car, but the company regularly hires talent from the auto industry and tests self-driving software in California. In 2018, Apple hired Doug Field to work on the Tesla Model 3.
Apple did not say if Krantz would be working on an Apple automotive project called the Special Projects Group or SPG. But Krantz has a lot of experience building teams that specialize in electric vehicles. Prior to joining Apple, Krantz co-founded Canoo, a self-driving electric vehicle company. At BMW, he spearheaded the electric vehicle development program that resulted in the BMW i3 and the i8 hybrid sports car.
