BMW Announces Discontinuation of Some Powerful M-Series ModelsDecember 17, 2019
The Bavarian brand is forced to announce another service company in which several models of the high-performance M-series were damaged. The fault was the cable harness of the gearbox. The gearbox can independently switch to neutral mode while driving.
BMW announced that it was forced to suspend the sale of the high-performance M5 sedan, some versions of the flagship M8 coupe, as well as the X5 M and X6 M crossovers. The problem was with the transmission wiring harness. The Bavarian automaker has already notified the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the possibility of this problem, but the agency has not yet published this information publicly.
The press service of the Bavarian brand has published a list of models in which the above problem can be detected.
So, the gearbox wiring harness can “fool around” in the high-performance BMW M5 Sedan (F90), produced from January 30 to October 30, 2019, the flagship 8-Series family – it’s about the M8 Convertible (F91), made from 20 February through October 30, 2019, the M8 Coupe (F92), which rolled off the assembly line from July 3 to October 20, 2019, and the M8 Gran Coupe (F93), which was produced between June 19 and October 29, 2019. In addition, this problem may occur with the “charged” X5 M crossover in the F95 body (June 6, 2019 – November 27, 2019), as well as the X6 M Sports Coupe F96 crossover (30 May 2019 – November 26, 2019).
The location and wiring of the transmission wiring harness can damage some components of the gearbox, which will eventually lead to a short circuit. This problem can cause the gearbox to shift to a neutral position while driving, which in turn can be quite dangerous.
To solve this problem, the car manufacturer’s specialists will replace the transmission wiring harness and lay it in a safer place. In February 2020, BMW will send a letter to the owners of the problematic cars with a notice of recall and ask for a meeting to fix the problem with your local dealer. In the meantime, the sports brand pauses the sale of the above models until the end of the internal investigation.
