BMW: 5th generation electric drive will be extremely compactJanuary 4, 2019
The guys from Bavaria are no less actively involved in electrification than other concerns. Engineers claim that the next generation of electric drive will get ultra-compact dimensions.
A recent interview with Stefan Jurashek, vice president of development for Electric-Powertrain at BMW, showed that the decisive advantage of the upcoming fifth generation drive system is the high degree of integration of the electric motor, transmission and power electronics into one component.
“The most important advantage of the fifth generation system is that the electric motor, transmission and power electronics now form a single, highly integrated component of the electric drive. This extremely compact device takes up much less space than the three separate components used in previous generations. Its modular design means that it is also scalable, which allows it to be modified to suit different types of installation site and requirements. ”Says Stefan.
“The BMW Group will begin to equip the next-generation electrified cars with new, scalable and even more powerful car batteries along with the introduction of new electric drive components. The modular concept will allow for flexible integration of new systems into each vehicle architecture. ”
According to him, the 5th generation system should be more powerful, more energy efficient, and also more compact and cheaper than current versions. All these parameters guarantee the popularization of hybrids and electric cars.
