Automotive brands that patent the most innovations namedJanuary 15, 2021

Every year, automotive companies around the world file thousands of patents for their inventions and discoveries to be the first in a particular field. The specialists wanted to find out which brands most often patent their technologies and which of them invests the most in the development of the automotive market.
The study revealed that the Japanese brand Toyota has applied for 380,000 patents over the past decade – an average of 31,650 patents issued each year. The closest competitor, Hyundai, filed “only” 184,000 applications over the same period. This is followed by Honda and Nissan.
In addition, it became known that Ford is the company that most patents various technologies in the field of autonomous driving. The total number of applications is not as large as that of all the companies presented above – 14,350 patents over ten years. At the same time, Toyota has submitted 13,000 similar applications. Interestingly, the Ferrari brand is at the top of this ranking.
Note that Toyota is also the leader in the number of patents in the field of electric vehicles – over ten years the company has filed applications for registration of 143,000 patents, which is twice as much as the nearest competitor. It is also noted that between 2018 and 2020, the number of automotive patents decreased by 89%.
