Audi Tradition on the Classic Car Tour

March 1, 2019 0 By autotimesnews

This year, Audi Tradition will take part in more than a dozen events in Germany and abroad to celebrate the anniversary. Exactly 70 years ago, Audi’s predecessor, Auto Union GmbH, was founded in Ingolstadt. Classic on the calendar is the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Classic Days at Castle Dyck and Donau Classic, this year featuring DKW Schnellaster, the first car made in Ingolstadt.

Audi Tradition will be present at the world’s largest exhibition of historic retro classic cars in Stuttgart (March 7–10), as well as the Techno Classica classic car show in Essen (April 10–14). Audi will appear at the auto show under the slogan: “A cosmic miracle – from Schnellaster to Avant.” The focus will be generalists from various periods in the history of the company.

At the end of World War II, Auto Union virtually ceased to exist. Expropriated by the Soviet occupation authorities at its original base in Saxony and expelled from the Commercial Register of Chemnitz in 1948, the company apparently did not have a future anymore. However, this future will continue in the US occupation zone. Auto Union GmbH was restored in 1949, when a small production was started in the former military buildings in Upper Bavaria in Ingolstadt. The first products of 1949 were the DKW Schnellaster motorcycle and the DKW RT 125 W motorcycle with the letter W denoting the west. Schnellasters will be presented in the Donau Classic (June 27-29).

The classic in the annual calendar of events is the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. Thirty years ago, in 1989, Audi introduced the Audi 90 in the American IMSA GTO series – one of the most impressive cars Audi has ever produced on asphalt. The famous Audi 90 IMSA GTO will start in Goodwood along with its predecessor Audi 200 quattro Trans Am and a restored DKW UL 500 motorcycle.

Other classic Audi Tradition events this year are the Heidelberg Historic (July 11-13) and the Sachsen Classic (August 22-24). The four-ring brand will also showcase its true colors on Bodensee Klassik (2–4 May) and Sauerland Klassik (2–5 October). For the first time, Audi Tradition will participate in the Zoute Grand Prix at the Belgian Knokke (October 10–13) and at the Kampenwand Historic motorcycle event in Aschau (July 13–14). And also in the markets of collectible car models on the Audi forums in Neckarsulm (November 3) and Ingolstadt (December 1). These events will complete the season.
