Audi R8, BMW M8 and Mercedes-AMG GT R fought on the racetrackJune 9, 2020
AutoBildSportsCars YouTube channel experts compared the “big German three” sports cars with soft roofs in extreme modes – Audi R8 Performance Spyder, BMW M8 Competition Convertible and Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster. At the wheel of all three cars, an experienced driver drove a fast lap along the 4.5-km Lausitzring highway.
In terms of characteristics, the models are similar: the Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster is not as powerful as its rivals, but it is the lightest and differs in rear-wheel drive. Under the hood, Biturbo Eight 4.0 with a capacity of 585 horsepower and a torque of 700 Nm, weight – 1,674 kilograms, price – from 209 thousand euros.
The Audi R8 Performance Spyder has a 5.2-liter 620-horsepower (580 Nm) aspirated V10. The drive is full, the mass is 1756 kilograms, the price in Germany is from 214.5 thousand euros.
BMW M8 Competition Convertible is cheaper and heavier than competitors: the price starts from 176 thousand euros, and the curb weight is 1988 kilograms. However, BMW calls the M8 “a real supercar”, in addition, under the hood, a 4.4-liter “twin-turbo eight” with a return of 625 horsepower and a traction of 750 Nm, and the drive is full.
On the dry track of the Lausitzring race track, an experienced pilot showed comparable lap times on all three cars – 2.1 seconds shared the best and worst. Audi and Mercedes-Benz were wrapped in identical Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires, while BMW Pirelli P Zero was standardly equipped with BMW tires.
