Audi lineup will miss two new products

The manufacturer has abandoned the idea of the four-door TT and the “charged” modification A1 Sportback.

Audi TT will replace generation in the next two years. At first, the company thought of expanding the TT family: along with a two-door coupe and a roadster, a liftback or sedan with a design based on the Audi TT Sportback prototype, which was presented in Paris back in 2014, could appear in the lineup. Later, foreign media reported that Audi would completely abandon the coupe, leaving only a stretched version. However, as it turned out, none of the expectations come true.

According to CarAdvice, referring to Audi Communications Director Peter Oberndorfer, the company really once thought about expanding the TT family with a four-door version, but abandoned the idea. The reason – practicality does not match the image of the model.

Also, this decision was influenced by the crisis, because the Audi brand belongs to the Volkswagen concern, which in 2016 was seriously affected due to “dieselgate”. Recall, this is a scandal associated with illegal software, which allowed cars with diesel engines to bypass the rules on the level of harmful emissions. As a result, Audi’s budget has declined, which led to savings on the new generation Audi TT.

There is no more room for fantasies: according to Peter Oberndorfer, TT will be represented only by two-door coupe and roadster after the change of generation. But the company will have to think about how to ignite interest in these sports cars, because in Europe, sales of the model are falling. Thus, in January-September 2018, 9,748 copies were sold, which is 25.6% less than last year. At the same time, a competitor from BMW – 2 series – sales are higher: for the first nine months, 25,386 units were sold, which exceeds last year’s figure by 11.3%.

Meanwhile, Audi may be short of not only the four-door TT: “under the knife” got a “charged” version of the new Audi A1 Sportback – S1. According to Peter Oberndorfer, the hatchback platform (now the MQB-A0) is not designed to create such a modification. He recalled that the development of the S1 of the previous generation (platform – PQ25) cost the company very expensive, and hinted that now the manufacturer cannot afford it.

But at the same time, according to a top manager, the Audi A1 will still get some kind of new modification, which will be presented at the end of next year. He did not tell more about it, assuring only that there will be no Q1 crossover. It is possible that Audi will show the “off-road” version of the A1 Allroad.

Audi A1 replaced generation in June 2018. The hatchback is equipped with gasoline engines of 1.0 liter (95 and 116 hp), 1.5 liter (150 hp) and 2.0 liter (200 hp). Gearbox – 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic with two clutches. Sales of new items launched in Europe last month.

On the market, the model as a whole feels confident. In Europe, 63,240 Audi A1 was sold in the first nine months of 2018, which is only a symbolic 1% less than last year. Although Mini Hatch sold 98,333 copies in the same period. (recession – 6%).
