Audi e-tron will receive smart matrix headlightsOctober 15, 2020
The new Audi headlights take safety to a new level. The e-tron models will be the first to receive smart headlights. This is the first time a series production of DML headlights for a production vehicle has occurred.
The new electric models of the Audi e-tron and its more stylish sibling Sportback are available from dealers from this month. The e-tron GT and the “charged” GT RS are on the way. But even before these sporty models, the two base models are already capturing the hearts of buyers: they are hard to miss as they are equipped with the first ever animated LED Digital Matrix headlights.
The new DML headlights consist of 1.3 million micromirrors per headlight and act as projectors on the road. For now, DML headlamps will offer five unique welcome and exit light signatures with animated graphics. As cool as it sounds, many might think this is some kind of gimmick or marketing ploy, since headlight technology goes too far and this level of design specialization is unlikely to come in handy on the road. However, this is not the case as new technology is making driving safer.
DML’s lighting includes a 50-meter “light carpet” designed to keep light within the driver’s lane and to prevent glare from oncoming traffic. The headlights also feature “curved low-beam lighting that bends in response to oncoming traffic and can help illuminate people or objects on the side of the road.”
According to the press office of the German brand, the electrostatically controlled micromirrors can adjust the pixels of the light beam up to 5,000 times per second and display light arrows on the road to keep the vehicle in its lane more easily.
