Audi E-Tron will not appear until battery technology improves

The all-electric receiver of the legendary Audi R8 supercar can be introduced in 2022. At the moment, the German premium brand believes that the current development of the technologies for which batteries are created is not sufficiently developed.

This modification of the supercar was introduced back in 2009. The car could be ordered in person – it was not displayed in the showrooms and it was not in the online configurator on the brand’s website either. I must say that the power unit R8 e-tron was very powerful and efficient thanks to a pair of electric motors on the rear axle, producing 456 horsepower and 921 Nm of torque.

The impressive performance was enough to accelerate this model to 100 km / h in 3.9 seconds, and the maximum speed was electronically limited to 241 km / h. The R8 e-tron used a 92 kWh battery, which was enough to cover 450 km on a single charge.

These were pretty good indicators for those times, but the model had a rather large price tag of 1.1 million dollars. It was about ten times larger than a regular 2015 R8 with a V8 engine.

Earlier it was said that in 2022 a new R8 e-tron will be introduced. Now representatives of Audi say that so far the time has not come for such an electric car.

“The new version of the R8 e-tron will definitely be introduced when the technology for creating batteries will reach sufficient development,” said Anthony Garbis, product manager of the Audi R8 project. He also noted that the cost of creating these very batteries is beginning to slowly decline, and their capacity has grown significantly lately.
