Audi controls the smell of its new cars

Audi has a special team of people who make a living by smelling new cars.

The German automaker has many stringent quality assurance measures that ensure that owning an Audi brand meets cfvst’s high expectations. Since 1985, Audi’s dedicated odor team, better known as the Nose Team, has been working hard to make the inside smell as pleasant as possible. But since it is impossible to make the interior completely odorless, the automaker seeks to make the material and chemicals used during production as neutral as possible to create a fresh smell for the new car.

Leather that smells like fish oil or aroma rugs is not acceptable to Audi. Audi Nose Team analyzes about 500 different components. Since the early 2000s, Audi chemist Heiko Lussmann-Geiger has led a team of five “sniffers” at the Bavarian Audi Quality Center. The way the car interior smells may sound trivial, but Lussmann-Geiger explains that car comfort factors should be considered a “pyramid” and that unpleasant odors can affect the customer’s perception of other comfort functions.

“At the top of this hierarchy, the pyramid is the well-being of the client, right at the bottom is the smell. If the buyer is now annoyed by this smell from below, he will no longer correctly perceive all the other positive comfort properties of the car. He is too annoyed by the stress caused by the smell, ”the manager explains his point of view.

Each smell is rated on a scale from one (“odorless”) to six (“unbearable”). Only materials such as glass, ceramics and metals are rated odorless, as they are classified as main components, but to pass a rigorous Audi odor test, other materials must be rated below four (“annoying”).
