The first day on the track after the holidays brought Toro Rosso a lot of new things – Daniil Kvyat uat received the fourth version of the power plant, and Pierre Gasley first got into the wheel of the second car. Ultimately, the team was not quite satisfied with the results of the day, but they hope for progress on Saturday and Sunday.

Pierre Gasley (17th): “A busy day, I tried to adapt to the car and learn all the procedures. This is the first time I have worked with this group of engineers, so much needed to be done today. We had a good plan, circle after circle, I felt that I was getting used to the car – I think we are progressing.
From the point of view of pace, everything turned out to be difficult, so you need to work and understand what direction to choose for tomorrow. Some pilots are waiting for fines this weekend, so you need to make sure that on Sunday we will have a good car. “
Jonathan Eddols, chief racing engineer: “It’s nice to be back in the race after the holidays, and there is nothing better than a sunny Spa – a terrific track and great weather conditions to work on the track. We are glad to work again with Pierre, we worked closely together last year, he has excellent speed, and we hope to get the best form from him in the second half of the season.
Of course, when he spoke for us the previous time, we had a different car, so the focus was on helping him adapt, achieve the best fit behind the wheel and balance STR14. This meant that we were less engaged in the car and drove more circles so that he could get used to. Now we are well aware of what he needs from the car.
As for Daniel, he received a new Honda powerplant of the 4th specification, it will be interesting to see what an increase in efficiency will be, which is always useful on such a track. Given that because of this, he will receive a fine, the priority for Daniel today was the race pace.
Going here, we knew that some turns on this track might not fit the characteristics of our car, so the focus was on changing settings in aerodynamics and mechanics in order to try to minimize handling problems.
In the first training session, we were not in the best shape, so before the second we made a lot of changes to the car, which allowed us to make progress, although we did not finish the day in the places we were counting on. We know where we are losing, we need to understand what to change in order to try to improve the behavior of the machine in these areas, without worsening the rest. ”
Toyoharu Tanabe, Honda F1 Technical Director: “It’s nice to be back on track after a four-week break. We have introduced here the fourth specification of our power plant, installing it in the Toro Rosso on Daniil Kvyat’s car.
This power plant went to the track for the first time, and it’s great that we managed to drive a lot of laps without any problems. This means that now we have a large amount of data that needs to be analyzed to prepare for the rest of the weekend. As for Gasley, he first worked with the team after returning, he needed to get used to everything again. ”
