The German Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW) has published interesting statistics on sales of electric cars by country, brand, and even car models over the past five years. According to the organization, there are already 5.6 million electric cars of various classes around the world, of which 2.2 million were purchased in 2018.

Top 5 most “electromobile” countries include China, USA, Norway, Great Britain and France. Interestingly, only two leaders of the segment had total sales exceeding 1 million, while in China there were already 2.6 million electric vehicles (while in 2018 only 1.256 million electric vehicles were registered there), and in the USA only 1.1 million (increase over the last year – 361 thousand electric vehicles).

If we talk about brands, the first five are as follows: BYD (517 thousand), Tesla (500 thousand), Nissan (379 thousand), BAIC (322 thousand), BMW (251 thousand). Despite the fact that Tesla is in second place in total sales, last year it sold more than all electric vehicles – more than 233 thousand, overtaking BYD with a result of 215 thousand due to 148 thousand sold by Tesla Model 3.

However, the most interesting is the rating of specific models of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids (PHEV). In the first place in terms of total sales, Nissan Leaf is held with the result of 363.9 thousand copies, 81 thousand of which were sold in 2018. In second place with a significant margin should be Tesla Model S with an indicator of 243.2 thousand copies and 47 thousand sales last year. Close the Top-5 with almost identical result in 172 thousand copies of the model BAIC EC-Series, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Chevrolet Volt. A completely different result is observed if we consider only 2018 (the second table) – here the unequivocal leader is Tesla Model 3

The following data relates exclusively to Germany but they give an idea of how the segment of various electric vehicles (public transport, trucks and cars, motorcycles, etc.) develops on the example of a European country.

For example, the most popular electric car in Germany is the Renault ZOE (6,360 units sold in 2018), and the most popular plug-in hybrid is the BMW 225xe Active (4,878 units in 2018). At the same time, the total number of battery electric vehicles (81.961 units) significantly exceeds the number of plug-in hybrids (59.729 units).

Recall that according to analysts Bloomberg in 2019, around the world will sell 2.6 million electric vehicles, of which 1.5 million (57%) will fall on the Chinese market.
