Outbreak recorded in Italy

The Italian engineering and design company Italdesign closed two factories in Turin, after one of the employees revealed a coronavirus. FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), in turn, restricted access to all its European facilities to persons who could potentially catch a dangerous disease.

Among all European countries, it was Italy that suffered most from the outbreak of coronavirus. By February 25, 2020, more than 200 cases of infection and three deaths were recorded there. Almost all of them are registered in the north of Italy, and the local authorities had to resort to emergency measures – introduce quarantine and isolate some areas, as well as cancel mass events, including early termination of the Venice Festival.

One of the patients with coronavirus turned out to be an employee of Turin Italdesign-Giugiaro. According to Automotive News, because of this, the company suspended operations at several sites, and also closed its headquarters in the suburbs of Turin, Moncalieri. Altogether, Italy has 928 Italdesign employees, most of whom work in Moncalieri, and about a hundred people in Nichelino.

Another automobile company affected by the outbreak of coronavirus in Italy was FCA. Her European office is also located in Turin, the administrative center of the Piedmont region, where three infected were identified. In this regard, the FCA banned entry to its European facilities for those who visited one of 13 Italian municipalities in February in which they identified patients, as well as China or other European countries. The restrictions apply to those who could be in contact with people potentially infected with coronavirus.

Ferrari also took action, which closed until March 1 two museums – in Modena and in Maranello. However, the assembly of supercars continues in the normal mode. On Monday, February 24, when news of an outbreak in Northern Italy appeared, Ferrari’s stock price fell five percent.

The center of distribution of the coronavirus was the Chinese city of Wuhan in the province of Hubei, which is currently closed for quarantine, as well as several other areas of the PRC. In many factories, downtime was introduced, and sales of new cars collapsed. The epidemic also affected the supply of components from China abroad – Fiat was already affected by this, which was forced to stop the production of the 500L model at a plant in Serbia due to a lack of audio system elements. A possible halt to the assembly was also warned at Jaguar Land Rover.
