Alfa Romeo will replace the compact MiTo by SUVMarch 19, 2018
Changing preferences in the automotive market make Alfa Romeo abandon the B-class hatchback.
This year marks ten years since the compact hatchback Alfa Romeo MiTo entered the market. The head of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Sergio Marchionne said at a press conference that MiTo can change the body type. Under this name, or instead of this model, a compact crossover can appear.
The expected novelty can become the second crossover in the Alfa Romeo range. The first crossover Stelvio is built on the Giulia D-Class sedan platform. But the second will be clearly smaller, as it is destined to replace the MiTo hatchback. In this case, its competitors can be the Mazda CX-3 and Fiat 500X. And the latter can receive the same platform.
“If the MiTo model is in the future, then I do not think it will be left with the current body type. The market declined, and the three-door hatchbacks of the B-segment are a rapidly shrinking segment. They have lost their practicality, so we are cautiously approaching the idea of their release, ” – Marchionne said.
There are no official announcements about the terms of development and technical characteristics of the new compact crossover under the Alfa Romeo brand.
The current generation of the hatchback Alfa Romeo MiTo remains unchanged for ten years. It was developed on the same platform as the Fiat Grande Punto and the Opel Corsa D. From 2014, the model is offered with gasoline turbocharged engines of 0.9 and 1.4 liters capacity and from 105 to 170 horsepower.
