Airbag outside? This is already being testedNovember 27, 2018
ZF, the largest manufacturer and supplier of spare parts, presented a new development at the Airbag 2018 symposium, which runs until November 28 in Mannheim.
Life makes all the new requirements for protection – active and passive safety technologies are combined in order to fulfill two functions at once. The external side airbag, which opens at the time of the collision, is a vivid example of the development of the Vision Zero concept, whose goal is zero accidents and zero emissions, said Michael Buchsner, head of the ZF safety technology department.
This airbag is triggered outside the car and serves as an additional collapse zone in case of an accident. Tests have shown that in addition to the fact that it protects the body in a collision, the severity of injury to passengers of the vehicle when it is triggered decreases by 40%. At the symposium, ZF presented the current development of an external protection system, as well as promising projects, such as protection against falling objects on a car and protecting motorcycles.
They think in the company about the protection of passengers of unmanned vehicles. For example, if the vehicle is fully automated, the driver does not have to be in the same position, he can work or relax and tilt the backrest, and in the future even turn the seat inside the cabin. Therefore, restraint systems, such as airbags and seat belts, must be designed in such a way as to protect the person, no matter what position he is in. This means that the concept of protection is changing – the cushions must be integrated into the seats. Adaptive dual-circuit airbags are designed, designed so that they can adapt to the dimensions of the driver.
