Two years ago the press spread the “terrible” news: soon all Volvo cars will be electrified. Other media were full of headlines that, say, the Swedes completely switched to electric cars, but, of course, Volvo did not mean such radical steps when they talked about electrification. Recall that now in the mass automotive use three types of hybrid power plants. Volvo cars will eventually be represented by the whole trio, and on full-size models like the XC90 or S90 / V90 we have a chance to see all three types of powerplants within the same model.

So, let’s start with the “soft” hybrids, which appeared later than everyone, but already became a sign of the times: premium manufacturers, releasing new models of E or F classes, completely translate them into this type of power unit. Recall that it is based on a 48-volt electrical system that can fully perform the functions of an on-board electrical network, previously assigned to a 12-volt system, but, most importantly, to provide for the operation of an additional electric machine, which at the acceleration (not only from the place) , but also with acceleration on the highway, adds torque to the crankshaft engine, and when the gas is released into the mode of the generator and charges a 48-volt battery.

The advantages of this system are a lot: firstly, fuel economy in the most decorated operating modes of the ICE; secondly, the possibility of using previously inaccessible knots, say, the supercharger with electric drive, thirdly, the absence of a high-voltage battery, which is very expensive. As Lex Kerssemarkes, Volvo’s vice president for the product, told us, roughly the first model of the Volvo with a soft hybrid will be brought to the series in early 2020.

Needless to say, Volvo will not refuse from successive hybrids with a high-voltage battery, recharged from an external source. It is this type of hybrids that picked up the baton from assisting hybrids, and it is to it that the governments of many countries offer substantial discounts, often in size reaching discounts for electric vehicles. Indeed, the energy reserve in batteries of modern consecutive “rosette” hybrids is enough for four dozen kilometers, however, their main problem is different: they do not allow to greatly reduce the size of ICE, but the other type of hybrids – parallel, on the contrary, even allows.

So, do not forget in Volvo and the experience of the modern car industry to create hybrids, in which the ICE only turns the generator, that is, creates electricity that “folds” into a high-voltage battery, and from there it is distributed by electric motors. Advantages of such a scheme is many, because it allows you to radically reduce the ICE and greatly reduce its price: the task is reduced to economical operation in a stationary mode, for which it is not necessary to use expensive devices such as adjusting the stroke of the valve. The same scheme employs dump trucks, railway electric locomotives, special equipment. Such prototypes are now being tested in Volvo. They will stand on the conveyor line after the “soft” hybrids, and unlike the serial plug-in, it is the range-extender scheme that will become the main one for compact and mid-size hybrid models of Volvo. It is not excluded that in the future it will completely replace the current rosette consecutive hybrids.
