Judging by those “spy” photos that came to our editorial office a couple of minutes ago, Ford is testing a prototype of the next generation Ford F-150 Raptor, a powerful pickup truck. However, fans of the high-performance model will have some surprises in store for its new looks. Earlier, a huge false radiator grille with a hefty Ford lettering was used, but now it looks like the Ford F-150 Raptor will receive a grille of a more modest size. While it is possible that in the photos It looks like it could be, the photo captures one of the trim levels of the regular F-150.
Ford will unveil its full-size pickup in a Raptor version in 2021.
These spy shots were taken after Ram unveiled the TRX, which is a full-fledged competitor to the Ford Raptor. Ram 1500 TRX engine power is equal to 702 horsepower. The TRX is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine from the Dodge SRT Hellcat. The Raptor will no longer be available with a V8 engine, although this may change.
Anonymous sources claim the 2021 Raptor could get its powertrain from the powerful Mustang Shelby GT500 sports coupe. This is a turbocharged 5.2-liter GT500 engine that is expected to develop between 725 and 750 hp. That’s below the 760bhp that the same engine produces for the Mustang; however, this is more than the Ram TRX has to offer.
In 2017, Ford reduced the Raptor’s powertrain to just one, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 450 hp. This motor is likely to go into a new pickup. We won’t see the next generation Raptor until early next year.
