A patent image of a new hypercar from Toyota appeared on the webAugust 24, 2020
Thanks to the forum, it was possible to get acquainted with a patent image that was filed by a Japanese company with the US Patent Office. The application, published on August 20 this year, describes the design features of a certain Toyota Canopy.
The Toyota Supra coupe of the A90 generation is currently the flagship sports car of Japanese delirium, but let’s still remind that the company is working on a completely new hypercar. Based on the recently released video, which is being commented by Toyota CEO and the automaker’s president himself, Akio Toyoda, development of the GR Super Sport hypercar continues right now.
Discovered on a foreign forum, data on Toyota’s patent applications suggests that the brand’s engineers are in full swing working on creating a completely new hypercar.
Toyota has reportedly filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to register a canopy section for a sports coupe that has received the designation Toyota Canopy. The data on this patent was published on August 20, 2020.
It is noteworthy that two patent applications from Toyota are mentioned. One is for the latches on the left and right side of the car – the document describes how they will unlock to open the door. Another patent concerns the side sill of the car – apparently, this application refers specifically to the GR Super Sport hypercar. This document describes how you can get in and out of your vehicle.
While the canopy patent application is not a sure sign of ongoing hypercar work being carried out on the GR Super Sport hypercar, we cannot help but believe it to be, given that there is no other vehicle for which this patent would be required. (plus the body shape of the car on the patent illustration – matches the body of the GR Super Sport hypercar).
For now, we know that the GR Super Sport has been created as a road legal model as part of the homologation process for a race car competing in the new FIA hypercar competition. It is expected that the road version of the racing car will be equipped with a hybrid power plant, which produces a total power of about 1000 horsepower.
Not so long ago, AutoTimesNews wrote that the cheapest Toyota crossover will go on sale at the end of August. Toyota has named the date of the market debut of its new crossover Yaris Cross, based on the eponymous hatchback.
