Before you travel to Spain, where the new product was tested, I want to recall the Shanghai auto show in 2016. Then Mazda showed its CX-4, made a lot of hype and generated a lot of rumors and discussions. The fact is that the model was intended only for the Chinese market, but both Europeans and Americans wanted to get it … In general, I liked the machine!
Therefore, this year Mazda also prepared the CX-30 for Geneva bride shows. Oh and rumors were on the eve of the premiere! However, the first impression was not disappointing, but now it’s time to get acquainted with the new product on the road. Built on the platform of a Mazda 3 the CX-30 is slightly larger than it due to a raised body. The clearance, by the way, was voiced almost at the very beginning of the presentation – 175 mm. And although there are all-wheel drive versions of i-Activ, the bet is made on completely different chips.
Mazda CX-30 Design
First of all, on the style embodied in the series after a successful demonstration on various concepts and prototypes. This is Kodo’s signature design for the second generation and it’s really different. Pay attention to the smooth bends of the side panels – as such, there are no edges at all. But there is a play of light and shadow, which the Japanese call the term Utsuroi. I don’t know if each element is given a name, well, the bend coming from the front wing also has its own – this is Sori Curve. But even if you do not take into account all these purely Japanese and somewhat meditative names, the design of the CX-30 was a success!
They say that the creators wanted to combine SUV and Coupe in it. The phrase, of course, is marketing and advertising, which is a sin to hide. More importantly, the image of the crossover turned out to be holistic and dynamic. And he, in my opinion, in some perspectives is perceived more harmoniously than the same Mazda 3 hatchback. There is no weighted stern and massive rear legs, but muscular arches, underlined by massive plastic overlays, are present. A plastic edging around the perimeter of the body looks quite appropriate (and it’s also very practical), but not with all the colors. By the way, several new colors are proposed for the model, but the signature Soul Red Crystal is still out of competition.
Interior Mazda CX-30
Acquaintance with the interior of the new Mazda CX-30 turned for me into a simple riddle “find ten differences”, because the editorial board on the test is just the new Mazda 3! Their salons are almost identical, the difference is only in some design details. In the crossover, the front of the cabin looks more plastic thanks to another dash of the dashboard, which flows very smoothly into the door cards.
Of course, on the test there were top-end configurations of the CX-30, so the equipment was at the level of: leather interior, keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, all-round visibility system, Bose audio system with 12 speakers, a combined dashboard where the central part is digital, but successfully disguised as an analog, multimedia system with navigation (and of course with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay) and much more. The monitor in the center of the dashboard seemed to be sunk into it, but at the same time, from the driver’s seat and during my landing, this does not interfere with the reading of information. Yes, and stretched in width (diagonal 8.8 inches), it also does not interfere with the review.
To reach far? So it makes no sense! – all menu controls only with a joystick and several buttons located on the center console. However, for those who are even a little familiar with modern Mazda, this will not be a revelation, because the company has been practicing this approach for several years. This is considered safer and less distracting the driver from the road.
But the block climate control can distract. Beautiful in design, but located as if under the visor of the front panel, its small screen and buttons without signatures (they are located directly under the pictograms on the screen) at first require attention. All these points are characteristic of passenger “triples”.
In the driver’s seat, you feel like in a kind of cockpit. At the same time, free space is not stolen, and all the necessary controls are easily and quickly. “In the new interior, we tried to combine these qualities,” say the designers. And they add: “And pay attention to the symmetry with respect to the central spoke on the steering wheel.” Indeed, there is both style and lightness in this. They didn’t save on quality materials either – leather trim on the front panel and door cards, soft plastics, piano lacquer with a 3D pattern, metal inserts.
I settled quickly in the driver’s seat – the set of electric adjustments at the seats is traditional, but the seats with a high back are just according to my complexion, and the steering outreach has become larger. In Mazda they call the figure of 70 mm, but for a better understanding it would be nice to know the indicators on the same “triples” of past generations, for example.
I liked the back row! It is spacious here both in length and in height, with the growth of 1.82, I myself can sit freely. Particularly pleased with the space for the feet! Although a good supply remains above the head and over the knees. Of the nice options – own airflow deflectors. By the way, the Mazda 3 do not have such. And finally, I note that the test cars were in several color versions of the interior – the version with white skin looks very nice and elegant!
For the trunk in the CX-30 allocated space in the amount of 430 liters. As for this class of car – very good! Moreover, the hold is wide and high, so it will be convenient to manage the free space. Under the raised floor, of course, only stamping under the dokatka and repair kit. I note that the entire trunk upholstery is a pile, and plastic, except for the door sill, is not here. And the same plastic “in a circle” mentioned above, morally simplifies the process of loading and unloading, because you can not be afraid to scratch the bumper!
Mazda CX-30 engines
Quite unexpectedly, the arrival of our group coincided with the real tropical weather in Spain – it was pouring like a bucket! Therefore, the “capture” of test machines by journalists was faster than usual. Of the three powertrains available for the Mazda CX-30, I focused on a 2-liter Skyactiv-G with 122 hp. And that’s why!
The fact is that now our Mazda importer, AUTO International, is in the process of negotiating the supply of the CX-30 to Ukraine, but with one tangible “but”. The power of this engine should be raised to 150 hp. And as far as it became known, the negotiations are close to their logical and successful conclusion! But diesel 1.8 (116 hp) and the new Skyactiv-X (180 hp) are not waiting. Yes, and it is unlikely that they will appear in the near future. Although I note that the exact same diesel is already offered on the Mazda 3.
Therefore, when in my hand there were the treasured keys to the red crossover with a 122-horsepower gasoline engine and an “automatic” gearbox, I didn’t get upset about the mono drive – yes, there were the CX-30 with the i-Activ all-wheel drive (it is available for all power units), but the share of all-wheel drive still accounts for a smaller percentage of sales.
But as compensation – the so-called “soft” hybrid technology. Called the M Hybrid, it accumulates energy (including recuperation during braking) in a lithium-ion battery and helps the engine at load times, powering all accessories. We add here the i-stop system, which gently shuts off the engine in traffic jams and at traffic lights, the cylinder deactivation system and get very good fuel efficiency. Looking ahead, I note that during the test, the average consumption (city-mountain roads-highway) fluctuated around 6.5-7 liters and did not seek to set anti-records. On the contrary, if you want to save money, the Mazda CX-30 willingly played along and the figure dropped to 6 liters, or even lower. And all this on a 6-speed hydromechanics.
From the very first kilometers, I have developed complete understanding with the CX-30, and harmony can be said. I’m not in a hurry, she, too, and rainy weather does not contribute to an active drive. In some places, on the autobahn, water flows make you feel fully aquaplaned, so it’s better to be careful. Although the complex of security systems closely monitors the situation around, he will tell you the speed limits (both on the projection display and on the electronic instrument panel) and gently hold in the band. As for leisureliness, this Skyactiv-G behaves like a classic aspirated, but stifled with Euro 6 standards does not add much agility to the crossover. I’m looking for passport acceleration to “hundreds”, hidden in the wilds of numbers and technical specifications tables: that’s 11.2 seconds. With the manual transmission promised 10.6, but how many will we have buyers of this version? But, again, these are numbers for Europeans. After all, we remember about 150 forces, right?
But during the trip Mazda CX-30 recommends itself as a very pleasant and friendly car! Accurate and not heavy steering, precise obedience, silence in the cabin and resilient knocked down suspension … However, there are nuances. The suspension here is really like that, but on good (and sometimes even very) Spanish roads. And on the same speed bumps you can already hear notes of stiffness. Obviously, the difference with the running passenger Mazda 3 in this regard will be very small. And don’t think that I criticize the rear beam. Japanese engineers made her excellent friends with all-wheel drive, and taught her to perfectly disguise herself as a multi-link. Without knowing the details, this technical feature is so easy not to figure out!
For the sake of interest and the purity of the experiment, I take the Mazda CX-30 with the new Skyactiv-X engine for an hour. Oh yes, vivacity and agility is felt from the very first kilometers! The car is livelier, more passionate, and the chassis settings, together with the G-Vectoring Control system (this is the one that helps in cornering), reveal better. Moreover, the cost of the trip is almost the same as on a 122-horsepower car.
But 180 hp with 2 atmospheric liters are not a revolutionary indicator today. And at what cost has this figure been reached? High compression ratio (16.3: 1), high fuel injection pressure, the original injection system and compression ignition, controlled by ignition! A kind of is a symbiosis of gasoline and diesel engines, including their advantages. Original, revolutionary? Of course! But how much was spent and effort? Will it pay off?
The European market will be able to give answers to these questions in the near future. Although even there, the launch of this modification is a matter of several months. We will wait for the Mazda CX-30 to 150 forces. I note that with the CX-30 Mazda will occupy a very convenient niche, just between the CX-3 and CX-5. And at the same time, it will complement the variations on the theme of the Mazda 3. The question remains only for the price – it is with a successful price list for this model that Mazda will be able to strengthen its position in our market.
