The original plan of the German brand was to electrify hot hatchback, but now priorities have changed.
As we approach the world presentation of the eighth generation Volkswagen Golf, it becomes clear why there are more and more messages about the version of the Grand Tourer, which should go on sale in 2020. According to the foreign edition of Autocar, the former chairman of the VW Group, Matias Muller, really wanted to electrify the “charged” Golf 8 GTI, but his successor, Herbert Diss, sees things differently. Ultimately, a car from Wolfsburg will do without a hybrid installation and will adhere to a proven formula: evolution, not revolution.
In other words, the Golf GTI in its eighth iteration will be equipped with the same 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine available in the current version of the car, but its power will increase to 252 horsepower.
It is assumed that the more powerful GTI Performance will be replaced by a new TCR GTI with 286 hp. The power boost will be complemented by an increase in torque from 350 to 370 Nm.
Not only will the Golf GTI get a 2.0 TSI, but a six-speed manual transmission and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic will be inherited from the previous version of the model. “The hybrid installation, originally planned for a car with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, working together with an electric motor and 48V electrical architecture, was canceled,” says the Autocar publication. “Less powerful versions of the Golf will use this hybrid scheme, but with a 1.5-liter TSI for gasoline models and a 2.0-liter TDI for diesel engines.”
