The fact that the Volkswagen Group intends to create a new sub-brand, under which they will produce low-cost cars, it became known a few years ago. It was expected that the brand would be global, and for its models they would start using a cheaper version of the MQB platform. In 2016, new details emerged: the Chinese joint venture FAW Volkswagen was chosen as the main partner, respectively, the China will become the main market for the brand. Today, February 26, the first official presentation of the brand took place at the headquarters of VW, located in German Wolfsburg, however, it was held only for Chinese journalists.

New brand called Jetta. Yes, the name of a global sedan, turned into a separate brand for the China. It is curious that in China, the Jettu also sell, but it is not a “world” model: under this name they produce a sedan, and its assembly is established at the FAW Volkswagen plant. A global Jetta in the China is available in as many as three options – as Sagitar and Bora from FAW Volkswagen and as Lavida from competing JV SAIC Volkswagen. The choice of the brand name in VW is explained by the fact that the local Jetta for the Chinese is like a Beetle for Europeans, that is, an icon, this model is primarily associated with the German concern (according to the 2018th sedan Jetta took the 7th place in the overall rating of sold models of the China).

Brand positioning has slightly changed. If earlier it was reported that this would be exactly a budget brand, now it is presented as a youth brand: the target audience is customers from 25 to 35 years. However, the prices for Jetta cars should still be lower than on models of other FAW Volkswagen brands – VW and Audi itself. The last mark, of course, do not take into account. As for VW, the most affordable model from this joint venture is the same local sedan of the same name – its price starts from 81,100 yuan. It should be noted that the Skoda is run by SAIC Volkswagen, its cheapest cars are the Fabia and Rapid Spaceback hatchbacks (both five-door cars cost from 69,900 yuan). Whether Jetta cars will be cheaper than Skoda is still unknown.

At the moment, announced three models: a sedan and two crossovers, their names are kept secret. Sedan, judging by the picture provided by the concern VW, is a new interpretation of the local Jetta, the differences – other bumpers, headlights and grille. Apparently, in China, this car will replace the current Jettou sedan. At the same time, the design of one of the Jetta brand SUVs was revealed: apart from the front end design, the cross is very similar to the Seat Ateca, and the model of the Spanish brand was previously caught during tests in China, although the Seat brand is not represented at all. In addition, according to the Chinese media, the second SUV Jetta will also be “inspired” by the Seat – which means we are waiting for either the compact Arona or the seven-seater Tarraco with the emblems in the shape of the letter J.

Jetta cars will be produced at the FAW Volkswagen plant in Chengdu, the brand will have its own dealer network. Sales should start in the third quarter of 2019, the clone Seat Ateca will be the first to enter the market. More detailed information about Jetta models will appear in April – a new brand will be presented at the Shanghai Auto Show.
